Understanding Pet Transfers
Pet transfers allow you to move animals between your shelter and partner organizations. This helps:
- Balance shelter capacity
- Find specialized care for animals with specific needs
- Expand adoption opportunities
- Coordinate rescue efforts
Types of Transfers
There are two types of transfers:
- Incoming: Receiving pets from partner organizations
- Outgoing: Sending pets to partner organizations
Creating a Transfer
From a Partner Profile
- Navigate to the partner's profile page
- Look for the "Pet Transfers" section on the right side
- Click "Create Transfer"
- Select transfer type:
- Incoming - Receiving pets from this partner
- Outgoing - Sending pets to this partner
Selecting Pets
After choosing the transfer type:
- A list of available pets will appear
- Check the boxes next to pets you want to transfer
- You can search for specific pets by name
- Selected pets appear in the "Selected Pets" section
Completing the Transfer
- Review your selected pets
- Add any notes about the transfer
- Click "Create Transfer"
- The transfer is created with "Pending" status
Managing Transfers
Transfer Statuses
- Pending: Transfer created but not yet completed
- Completed: Pets have been successfully transferred
- Cancelled: Transfer was cancelled before completion
Viewing Transfer Details
From a partner's profile:
- Look at the "Pet Transfers" section
- Each transfer shows:
- Transfer date
- Number of pets
- Transfer type (incoming/outgoing)
- Current status
Completing a Transfer
When pets are physically transferred:
- Find the pending transfer in the list
- Click on the transfer
- Update the status to "Completed"
- Add any final notes
Cancelling a Transfer
If a transfer needs to be cancelled:
- Find the pending transfer
- Click on the transfer
- Change the status to "Cancelled"
- Add a note explaining why
Transfer History
The transfer history shows:
- All past transfers with each partner
- Total number of incoming and outgoing transfers
- Dates and details of each transfer
This helps you track:
- Partnership activity levels
- Transfer patterns over time
- Which partners you work with most
Best Practices
Before Creating a Transfer
- Confirm the partner is ready to receive/send pets
- Verify all pet medical records are up to date
- Ensure transportation arrangements are made
- Check that all required paperwork is complete
Documentation
- Keep copies of transfer agreements
- Document any special care instructions
- Note behavioral observations
- Include medical records with transfers
Communication
- Notify the partner when creating a transfer
- Confirm receipt when transfers are completed
- Share any important updates about transferred pets
- Maintain regular communication with active partners
