Understanding the complete adoption workflow in PawPlacer

Adoption Process Overview

The PawPlacer adoption process is designed to create successful matches between adopters and pets. Our streamlined workflow helps staff efficiently manage adoptions while ensuring each pet finds a loving home.

The Adoption Journey

PawPlacer breaks down the adoption process into three main phases:

  1. Adopter Selection - Choose or create an adopter profile
  2. Optional Donation - Add a donation to support the shelter
  3. Payment Processing - Complete the adoption with payment

Adopter Selection

The first step in the adoption process is selecting the adopter. This can be done in two ways:

  • Search for an existing adopter: Use the search function to find adopters already in your system
  • Add a new adopter: If the person is new to your shelter, you can add them to your system

Each adopter profile shows the pets they're interested in, making it easy to track potential matches.

Adoption Terms Agreement

Before proceeding with the adoption, the adopter must review and agree to your shelter's terms and conditions. These terms outline:

  • Adoption responsibilities
  • Pet care requirements
  • Return policies
  • Other important legal information

The adopter must explicitly check a box to confirm their agreement before moving forward.

Optional Donation

After agreeing to the terms, adopters have the opportunity to make an additional donation to your shelter. This step is optional but provides valuable support for your organization.

PawPlacer lets you:

  • Offer preset donation amounts with descriptions
  • Allow custom donation amounts
  • Skip donations entirely if preferred

Payment Processing

The final step is processing payment for the adoption fee and any donations. PawPlacer supports multiple payment methods:

  • Cash
  • Credit card via Stripe
  • Other digital payment options (PayPal, Venmo, etc.)

The system automatically calculates:

  • Adoption fees
  • Donation amounts
  • Processing fees (if applicable)
  • Total payment due

Completing the Adoption

Once payment is confirmed, the adoption is officially recorded in the system. PawPlacer will:

  • Update the pet's status to "Adopted"
  • Create an adoption record
  • Send a confirmation email to the adopter
  • Generate a printable adoption receipt
