The Prescriptions feature in PawPlacer's Medical Suite allows you to track all medications prescribed to your pets, monitor refills, and receive alerts for expiring prescriptions. This comprehensive system integrates with your medication database and veterinarian records to provide complete prescription management.
Accessing Prescriptions
Prescriptions can be accessed in two ways:
- From the Medical Suite: Navigate to Medical Suite and click the "Prescriptions" tab
- From a Pet's Profile: Go to a pet's profile and click the "Medical Records" tab, then select "Prescriptions"
Viewing Prescriptions
When you access the Prescriptions page, you'll see:
- Search Bar: Filter prescriptions by medication name or pet name
- Prescription List: Displayed as either:
- A data table (on desktop) with columns for pet, medication, dosage, frequency, status, and refills
- Cards (on mobile) showing prescription details in an easy-to-read format
Adding a New Prescription
- Click the "Add Prescription" button at the top right of the screen
- Fill out the information in the form that appears:
Basic Information
- Pet (required): Select the pet receiving the prescription
- Medication (required): Choose from your medication database
- Veterinarian: Select the prescribing veterinarian
Dosage Details
- Dosage (required): Enter the amount per dose (e.g., "1 tablet", "5mg")
- Frequency (required): How often the medication is given (e.g., "Twice daily", "Every 8 hours")
- Route: Select administration method (Oral, Injection, Topical, etc.)
- Amount: Total amount dispensed (e.g., "30 tablets", "100ml")
Prescription Information
- Start Date (required): When the prescription begins
- End Date: When the prescription ends (leave blank for ongoing)
- Prescription Number: Reference number from the veterinary clinic
- Refills Remaining: Number of refills authorized
- Status: Active, Completed, or Stopped
- Notes: Additional instructions or information
- Click "Save" to create the prescription
Managing Prescriptions from Pet Profiles
On each pet's profile page, the Medical Records tab includes a Prescriptions section with:
Active Medications Summary
A quick overview widget showing:
- Number of active medications
- Prescriptions expiring within 7 days (highlighted in amber)
- Prescriptions needing refills (when refills = 0, highlighted in red)
Prescription Tiles
Each prescription displays as a tile showing:
- Medication name with prescription badge if required
- Dosage and frequency
- Status indicator (Active, Completed, or Stopped)
- Refills remaining badge
- Veterinarian and clinic information
- Start and end dates
- Quick action menu for editing or changing status
Prescription Status Management
Prescriptions have three status options:
- Active: Currently being administered
- Completed: Full course finished as prescribed
- Stopped: Discontinued before completion
You can quickly change status using the dropdown menu on each prescription tile.
Alerts and Notifications
The system provides automatic alerts for:
Expiring Prescriptions
- Prescriptions expiring within 7 days display with an amber warning
- The active medications summary highlights the count
Refill Reminders
- When refills remaining reaches 0, a red badge appears
- The summary widget shows the count of prescriptions needing refills
Medication Warnings
- If a medication has warnings in the database, they display prominently on the prescription
Integration with Medical Records
Prescriptions can be linked to medical records:
- When creating an exam or procedure, you can add associated prescriptions
- Linked prescriptions show the related medical record
- This creates a complete medical history showing which visit resulted in which prescriptions
Mobile Features
On mobile devices:
- Prescriptions display as cards optimized for small screens
- All editing functions remain available
- Status changes can be made with a single tap
- The active medications summary adapts to mobile layout
