Foster families sometimes fall in love with their foster pets and decide to adopt them. The system makes it easy to convert a foster to an adopter while keeping their history intact.
Conversion Options
When converting, you can choose to:
- Keep both roles: They remain a foster and become an adopter too
- Adopter only: Remove their foster status completely
When to Convert
Convert a foster to adopter when:
- They want to permanently keep their foster pet
- You've approved them for adoption
- The pet is ready to be adopted
How to Convert
- Open the foster's profile
- Click the three-dot menu (top right)
- Select Convert to Adopter
- Choose your options:
Foster Status
- Keep foster role: They can continue fostering other animals
- Remove foster role: They become an adopter only
Form Template
- Select an adopter form template if you have custom forms
- Otherwise, the default form will be used
- Click Convert to Adopter
What Happens Next
The system automatically:
- Creates an adopter profile using their foster information
- Links both profiles together
- Keeps all foster history intact
- Updates the foster status based on your choice
Managing Dual Roles
When someone has both foster and adopter roles:
Profile Navigation
- A yellow banner appears showing they have both roles
- Click the link to switch between profiles
- Contact information is shared between both
Information Sharing
- Basic details (name, email, phone) are linked
- Changes in one profile update the other
- Role-specific information stays separate
Completing the Adoption
After converting:
- Go to the new adopter profile
- Create an adoption for the foster pet
- Process any adoption fees
- The foster assignment will automatically complete when the adoption is processed
Common Scenarios
They Want to Keep Fostering
- Choose "Keep foster role" during conversion
- They can adopt their current pet and foster others
- Both profiles remain active
They're Done Fostering
- Choose "Remove foster role" during conversion
- They become an adopter only
- Foster history is preserved but they can't get new assignments
Multiple Foster Pets
If they're fostering multiple pets but only adopting one:
- Convert with "Keep foster role"
- Create adoption for the specific pet
- Other foster assignments continue normally
Important Notes
- Conversion cannot be undone (but you can change roles later)
- All foster history is preserved
- The adopter profile uses the same contact information
- You'll need to process the adoption separately after converting
